Floating metal staircase for a private home: design, lightness and functionality
The staircases are much more than a connecting element between floors. When properly integrated into a home’s design, they can become a standout feature that adds personality, spaciousness and value to the space.
In this project, the main goal was to fit a staircase into the living room while preserving the sense of open space and visual continuity throughout the home. To achieve this, we designed and fabricated a custom metal structure with a minimalist aesthetic, where every element was conceived to minimize visual impact without compromising the stability and safety of the whole.
A staircase integrated into the home’s architecture
The client wanted to connect both floors without disrupting the harmony of the living room or sacrificing the sense of spaciousness. Unlike conventional staircases, which usually feature side stringers or bulkier structures, we opted for a much lighter solution based on a central metal structure that supports the steps.
Thanks to this design, the staircase blends naturally into the home and allows light to flow freely, reinforcing visual continuity and the feeling of open space.
Custom-made metal structure
As with any bespoke project, this home called for very specific requirements. That’s why we developed a staircase fully adapted to the available space and the style the homeowners were looking for. We designed a central metal structure capable of providing the necessary strength without sacrificing a clean, elegant look. On top of it, we fitted wooden steps that bring warmth and create an interesting contrast with the metal, resulting in a balanced, timeless piece.
Combining both materials allowed us to achieve a strong, durable solution perfectly integrated into the home.
The visual effect of floating steps
The first thing that stands out about this staircase is its visual lightness. By removing bulky side structures and concentrating support on a single central axis, the steps appear to float in space.
This effect not only gives the piece personality, but also helps maintain the sense of spaciousness in the living room. Light flows more freely and views remain unobstructed — something especially important in homes where the goal is to enhance brightness and visual continuity between different spaces.
